Elephants have very good memories for being a non humanoid. This was intentional and that woman must have done something very stupid or evil to the elephant and the herd. They roam around India and near many towns and villages. This just proves that they don't forget things serious. Kind of like a guilty dog they act very embarrassed for a while after because they know they were caught.
