the people were nice to feed the deer. but, chocolate / theobromine isn't good for most animals, including deer.

This is why chocolate, which doesn't contain caffeine directly, is bad for animals who normally have a low tolerance for caffeine. The same thing happens in humans, but we have a higher tolerance for caffeine due to our physiology adapting to our long term consumption of caffeine and caffeine-precursors throughout human history.
