>A coalition of unions, parents, and Democratic lawmakers rallied in Albany demanding New York guarantee universal childcare. The Universal Child Care Act, S3415A/A5899, would treat childcare as a public service, like public schools, and would provide free childcare for kids from six weeks old to age 12, regardless of family income or immigration status. The state would need to invest between $800 million and $1 billion on capital projects to expand classrooms, and $200 million or more on workforce development, grants for districts, and data upgrades. The legislation could prevent New Yorkers who think it's too expensive to raise a family from leaving the state.
