In all my almost 40 years on this planet, I have never, ever heard of this. Suddenly yesterday, my parents start playing this like it has been a holiday tradition all this time. "What, you've never heard this?? How could you have never heard of this? We always play it this time of year!" No! No, y'all didn't! Not even once! Bullshit!
My parents are the type to share things like this, so to say it took almost 40 years for them to expose me to it just doesn't make any sense. My mother shoved every little holiday song, tradition, every pop culture "thing" of her time, down my throat. There's no way they just "missed" this one for 40 damn years.

It's possible your mom hasn't seen the movie, or hasn't seen it in many years. A lot of us forgot there was a movie made after the song. That's about how long it's been for me, like watching it anew. You should spring it on her when you report back.
