Yeah, people's minds can be pretty screwy, start adding pharmaceuticals in the mix and it can go to a whole different level of crazy

I remember the girl that I was with, she would go to a joo psych 'doctor' and he was just trying medicine out on her to see which one took. I thought it was weird but I was going through some of my own shit that I was self-rectifying via physical fitness, so I was preoccupied with tiring my mind out in what I considered a healthy way. One of the most tiring and mentally draining and rewarding physical activities I found is chopping wood. I would go to her property that she lived on and just caught up all the down trees that were laying all over the place and then split the wood. I'd get back to her apartment completely broken both physically and mentally but not in a bad way. Just in a way that I needed a nice warm shower a beer and bed. All that cost me was a little bit of oil and gas for the chainsaw and a file for my ax.

I wonder how many people could actually see some improvement and even get "cured" by just doing strenuous physical activity a few times a week.

It would probably cure a lot to be honest. Humans are not meant to sit on our asses for 8 hours a day either driving or in front of a computer or just even standing in one place. We're meant to be in our environment making choices about survival everyday. And that is both physically and mentally draining which is probably what 99.9% of mentally ill people need.
