Dancing nights: concert valse by eric coates
this short work for orchestra was one of the many that coates would compose during the 1930’s as part of his contract with columbia graphophone co. ltd. despite columbia being an offshoot of the american columbia phonograph company, it would become a fully independent british company in 1922, and would actually acquire a controlling interest in the american company from 1925 until 1931. by 1931, columbia graphophone co. ltd would merge with the ‘gramophone company’ and be renamed emi (which stands for electrical and musical industries).
due to the limited storage size of records at the time and the rigid schedule of radio broadcasting, many songs coates completed between 1920 and 1940 were short but evocative.
this work is comprised of a single movement.
