rachmaninoff completed this suite for orchestra in 1940 at the age of 67. the premiere performance was given in january of 1941 in philadelphia under the conductor eugene ormandy to whom the work is dedicated. rachmaninoff uses motifs from his other symphonies as well as the works of rimsky-korsakov. unusually for a full orchestra work, rachmaninoff gives solo passages to the alto saxophone. this would be the final composition for orchestra rachmaninoff would complete.

this suite is comprised of three movements: i. allegro ii. andante con moto iii. lento assai – allegro vivace
