String quartet no. 62 in c major, op. 76, no. 3 ‘emperor’ by joseph haydn
haydn completed a set of six string quartets between 1797 and 1798 in dedication to hungarian count joseph georg von erdődy. due to a contractual agreement between haydn and a publisher in london, the quartets were not released to the public until 1799, however performances of some of the works were likely given at the court of prince nicolaus esterházy ii where haydn was employed.
this concerto was given the nickname ‘emperor’ as the quartet is based on variations on an anthem haydn composed for holy roman emperor francis ii.
this concerto is comprised of four movements: i. allegro ii. poco adagio; cantabile iii. menuetto. allegro iv. finale. presto
