The flying dutchman, wwv. 63: ‘overture’ by richard wagner
wagner completed his opera ‘the flying dutchman’ in 1841 while living in paris. he gave the premiere of the opera at the königliches hoftheater, dresden in 1843. the story revolves around a dutch sea captain who is cursed to sail for eternity except for one day every 7 years where he can come ashore to find a woman who will be true to him.
the story is partly inspired by a dangerous sea crossing that wagner and his wife undertook in 1839 which temporarily left them stranded in a norwegian fjord.
