Pavane for a dead princess by maurice ravel

ravel composed this pavane in 1899 while studying at the conservatoire de paris under the tutelage of gabriel fauré. a pavane is a slow processional dance that was common in european courts in the sixteenth and seventeenth century.

ravel noted that this pavane was not for a specific princess, or even for a specific princess that died young. it is more a homage to the dance a young spanish princess may have performed at the spanish court in centuries past.

I like Ravel for his arrangement for orchestra of Mussorgski's Pictures At An Exhibition. That is a magnificent work. This one, on the other hand, is a little too reedy and weak for my taste. It strikes me as so-so Hollywood background music for a movie.
