Stephen, as you may know, was the first of the "Christian martyrs," a deacon of the early church in Jerusalem, whose teachings had angered members of various synagogues. He was accused of blasphemy and put on trial: he delivered a speech denouncing the Jewish authorities who were sitting in judgement, and was subsequently stoned to death in 36 a.d.
The feast of St. Stephen is observed on December 26, which is also known as "Boxing Day."
