Clarinet Sonata in F minor, Op. 120, No. 1 by Johannes Brahms

Brahms completed a pair of clarinet sonatas in 1894 while on a retreat to the resort town of Bad Ischl near Salzburg. In 1890 Brahms had announced that he was retiring from compositions, however after hearing a performance of the clarinetist Richard Muhlfeld, the composer was inspired to write four additional works involving the clarinet. The sonatas would have their first public performance in 1895.

This sonata is comprised of four movements: I. Allegro appassionato II. Andante un poco adagio III. Allegretto grazioso IV. Vivace
