Romeo and Juliet: Overture-Fantasia, TH 42 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
The final version of this ‘Overture-Fantasia’ was completed in 1880 and received its premiere in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, but was then the Russian Empire. The work is based on the play of the same name by William Shakespeare.
The reception was only moderate in Georgia, and even worse in Paris and Vienna. The reception with Russian audiences was more positive and it is now a popular piece played across multiple countries.
