This is an interesting song. Vocally, he was obviously inspired by Curtis Mayfield. He even co-starred with him in the classic prison drama "Short Eyes" as the gay rapist character. Anyway, this seems to be the era where early 70's R&B was starting to morph into disco. So, I guess this would be proto-disco.
