Suite No. 1 in G Minor (Fantaisie-tableaux), Op. 5 by Sergei Rachmaninoff

This suite for piano duet was completed in 1893. The premiere performance was given in November the same year in Moscow with Rachmaninoff playing one piano and fellow composer Paul Pabst playing the other. In correspondence with his cousin Sofia Satin, Rachmaninoff indicated that he wanted the work to function as a collection of four ‘musical pictures’, hence the original name of the suite “Fantaisie-tableaux”. It is unclear whether Rachmaninoff maintained that preference when completing the work, and eventually the suite would be dedicated to composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

This suite is comprised of four movements: I. Barcarolle. Allegretto II. La nuit... L'amour... (The night…the love…) Adagio sostenuto III. Les Larmes (The Tears). Largo di molto IV. Pâques (Easter). Allegro maestoso
