So I've been plugging away at aeolian and mixolydian and the strangest thing I noticed. E aeolian for example has the exact same notes as G major. I know you already know that. So here I am memorizing the pattern for aeolian when I already know the major scale and suddenly I forgot why the hell I'm doing this.

Yeah, the G over the Em. or, aeolian. Same shit, exact same notes and pattern. There's still 6 other modes to learn and when you play them, it's just the major key.

Yep. I think it's just supposed to invoke a certain feeling whenever you transition to it. When I started studying modes I ran through a few of them and eventually had the same reaction as you. "Why am I doing this?"
