So I've been plugging away at aeolian and mixolydian and the strangest thing I noticed. E aeolian for example has the exact same notes as G major. I know you already know that. So here I am memorizing the pattern for aeolian when I already know the major scale and suddenly I forgot why the hell I'm doing this.

It's merely the result of a need to express the same thing in different ways relative to other instruments so that everyone is "on the same page" and you have access to every shape available on an instrument to fully be able to express yourself in any mode, no matter where the other instruments go.
