So I've been plugging away at aeolian and mixolydian and the strangest thing I noticed. E aeolian for example has the exact same notes as G major. I know you already know that. So here I am memorizing the pattern for aeolian when I already know the major scale and suddenly I forgot why the hell I'm doing this.

Music theory isn’t something you practice; it’s something you understand. Aeolian is the 6th mode of the Major scale so naturally it’s going to have the same notes.

As far as practice: It’s great to know some modal patterns if you ever plan to write melodies or solos, as you obviously will be playing chords other than the tonic. If you want to think of it as the Major scale starting at a different note then that’s perfectly fine too, as that’s really all it is.
