Piano Concerto No. 5 in E♭ major, Op. 73 ‘Emperor Concerto’ by Ludwig van Beethoven
Beethoven completed his fifth piano concerto in 1811 and dedicated the composition to Rudolph Joseph Rainier, Archduke of Austria. The concerto was premiered in January 1811 at the Palace of Prince Joseph Lobkowitz in Vienna. The work has three movements: I. Allegro II. Adagio un poco mosso III. Rondo: Allegro
The colloquial name ‘Emperor Concerto’ is not in reference to a particular emperor, and was not the name Beethoven used for the piece. It was a later addition by English publisher Johann Baptist Cramer.
