I thought it was a loop rolling all the time with some rudimentary envelope circuitry. I guess the envelope is just the tape coming closer to the head. This weird solution is what makes them sound like that, tho. I wonder if someone has the master tapes. I believe the tapes will break eventually.

I'm sure they do break at some point. And even before that they will gradually degrade in fidelity. Since they still make parts for them, and even that upgraded electronics board she mentioned, I would assume they must have replacement tape sets. It would seem likely they now have a master digital copy and produce new tapes from that. I wonder if new tapes have the same warmth now.
