Yeah. Jazz gets your ear used to these dissonant 7/9/11/13 chords and then you can basically play random notes and people love it. I do this to great effect around Christmas with Vince Guaraldi stuff. Often rhythm takes priority over other aspects like pitch, melody, counterpoint, etc. and I think it loses a lot of flavor.
In Classical music, the composer agonizes over every measure, every note. Even the notation looks elegant.
