But with the so-called “free format” parameter of the LAME encoder, it can be stored with any bitrate between 8 and 640 kbps.

However, not many systems are able to play “free format” files, especially at higher bitrates.

Command used: lame --freeformat -b640 Memories\ -\ Ehrling.wav LAME640/freeformat/Memories-640K.wav

Actually, VBR can also be combined with free format! (Just tested it.)

And it shows some bars which display the bitrate spectrum at the current moment.
