The only reason it sounds better is because it wasn't as overproduced and it sounded warmer thanks to the non-digital technology used back then. Otherwise, there were lots of robotic drum machines and repetitive rythms. True, there were lots of writers who had a formal musical education and knew how to write a progression, but this happens all the time.
