I'm retired, so I'm home most of the time. I live in a semi-rural neighborhood. Battery powered outdoor motion sensors are inexpensive. I'm sure there are solar powered models. I have my yard covered. They sound different so I can tell from the indoor alarm which sensor is going off so I know where the intruder is. UPS and FEDEX are kind enough to test the alarms for me on a regular basis. I have them set up high enough to avoid animal alerts although a large dog will set them off which is OK.
