Such places are obviously military camps, holding armed forces ready to be unleashed like a horde of locusts upon the local Irish. High fences, gates that can't be seen through, military age fighting men by and large (and whatever poor souls they drag in to rape) are manning them... It's war, people. These are military outposts of an invading army.
