The Germans let themselves succumb to feelings of shame over the last several decades, trying to prove to the world that they are "nice" people. They may realize soon there is no value in trying to fit in that frame just for a social opinion, particularly with social opinion of Jews changing. Maybe they'll rediscover their roots but it'll take a while.
