I don't know any Americans that speak German, or the vast majority of the other languages for that matter.
Even when I was young and my family would frequent shopping malls in the big metro areas for holidays and back-to-school clothes, there might be a chinese or Vietnamese family eating in the food courts, but I never heard anything like german or french.
