"America was a nation of immigrants." Yes, there were British, German, French, Irish, and other Europeans. At first the different cultures and languages clashed, but the genetic similarity of the people won out, and the people became one group known as Americans.

The modern attempt at this isn't working, because the new people are biologically dissimilar and mostly fail to integrate.

Not just that but there was no "America", until it was founded. Before that it was just the "new world".
