They offed him so they could close the case on that book and shut him up. He was a loose end unlike his wife who is fully established. They have the dirt on the people they need dirt on, they didn't need him anymore. Better to part ways and cut trails

Then why arrest him at all? Why reveal his crimes? Why not do what they usually do, and quietly have him assassinated?
Like hanging himself from a doorknob with a red tie, or committing suicide by shooting himself twice in the back of the head, or getting killed in a robbery gone wrong where nothing was taken?
