Competition? Epstein was working for them, collecting blackmail, offering incentives, etc. They ended up pinching their own guy.
I do understand why they offed him after he was in custody though, can't have him talking, can't trust him to stay quiet

They offed him so they could close the case on that book and shut him up. He was a loose end unlike his wife who is fully established. They have the dirt on the people they need dirt on, they didn't need him anymore. Better to part ways and cut trails
