Premise: deadbeat dad and hacker Chris Evans gets Santa Claus kidnapped, is forced to team up with ELF operative Dwayne Johnson to find him. It's a dumb premise, but it's a lot of fun. There's no girl-bossing, no DIEversity, no feminism, no "messaging", no race-swapping, no -ist/-ism/-phobe programming, just a decent Christmas movie with a heartfelt message at the end (every choice you are presented with, you can choose to be "good" or not). The villain is a woman, which is a bold choice; there's "magic" gadgets weaved into the storyline, and the action scenes are satisfying. Chris Evans plays the role well, playing the snarky deadbeat with a heart of gold, while realistically reacting to the offbeat situations he's in. The Rock plays the straight man, dedicated to his job as Santa's bodyguard at all costs. Lucy Liu makes for a good director, and J. K. Simmons excels at playing a leaner, stronger Santa than I think we've ever seen. I'm honestly wondering how this movie got made. It has no political messaging, no modern-day opinions, nothing that Hollyweird wants to push. It's just a simple story about Saint Nick getting kidnapped and his team trying to get him back. It's not an award winner, but it's enjoyable and inoffensive, which is more than we're getting nowadays. If you've got the chance to see it in cinemas I'd recommend it, as it's a vote for a return to the movies we used to have.
