King Ghezo (played by Boyega) and his female warriors literally fought wars to keep their slave trade going when the British were doing their best to abolish it. A literal quote of the guy in answer to the British demands to stop the slave trade was "The slave trade has been the ruling principle of my people. It is the source of their glory and wealth. Their songs celebrate their victories and the mother lulls the child to sleep with notes of triumph over an enemy reduced to slavery."
