Funny cars are just slingshots with a body.

The explosion wasn't the problem, and probably wasn't why he ended up going to the hospital...those collisions with the concrete walls certainly did.

It's amazing that the human body can survive those impacts.

Those weren't that bad, they were glancing and it was a "long" wreck. Drivers from every series all say the same thing, "I'll take a long wreck over a short wreck" because all that energy is removed from the car during the wreck.

The shock isn't good from the wall impacts, but that they were mostly glancing blows is, typically, a good thing.
