I read a story where it was being discussed if the Navy should simply allow the these missiles and drones to get in the range of the The Phalanx. The Phalanx system is a much cheaper alternative to eliminate these threats. However the Phalanx would only work on targets directed at the Navy ships, it could not be used to defend merchant ships unless the Navy boats were escorting them closely.
