My first trip underway was on a ship that had broken fresh water evaporators. No showers for 3 weeks while doing war games 23/7. Toilets turned on 1/2 hour in the morning and evening. Shit piled literally above the seat. Sailors pissing and shitting in plastic bags and hanging it on the end of their rack because they were too lazy to climb a ladder to throw it over the side. After 3 weeks of living like animals we were heading back to Long Beach and the Captain got on the 1MC (ship wide announcement) and stated "there will be no liberty until morale improves". I remember standing in OPS staring at the speaker with 6 other sailors thinking that Captain Bligh was out of his fucking mind. My uniform was so crusty that it would stand by itself if I took it off. When I finally got in the shower water beaded up and ran off me.
