The US military used to be an elite fighting force at one time. I doubt very much that they are today.

When Rome fell, it was because it's legions had been filled with northern barbarians, mostly from Germany, because the native Romans no longer wanted to fight in the ranks.

The Germans were great soldiers, but they decided they wanted to fight against Rome.
