The US destroyer "The Sullivans" got a hole in the port of the US state of New York and sank. Avia.pro news agency has learned that the American warship was submerged in more than half of the water, despite attempts to save the warship. This may indicate that the warship may be completely decommissioned.
The U.S. destroyer is known to have been docked at Buffalo and Erie County Military Park, New York. The warship has essentially been decommissioned for quite some time, but for unknown reasons, the ship's hull has been leaking heavily and has begun to rapidly take on water - 50 tons of water per minute - and at this point, given the ship's weakened hull, there is a risk of its structure collapsing.
"The decommissioned Fletcher-class destroyer USS The Sullivans, moored at Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, began going down. On Thursday morning, the ship sank to the point where water reached the top deck aft and the ship had a severe starboard roll. "We have a task force here. We're not going to abandon the ship and the failure is unacceptable," Park President Paul Marzello said. Marzello said they believe there was a breach in the starboard side of the hull Wednesday night. He said crews trying to stabilize the 79-year-old ship are pumping out up to 13,000 gallons (50 tons of water) a minute. "I think we've seen the worst of it, but I don't know," he said. "I'll let you know that this ship will be saved. We will fix this ship and it will not go down. We take this very seriously," reports the American edition of Spectrum News.
