Objectively, we lost in Vietnam. So any 'point' of the conflict never came to fruition. Vietnam was a proxy war with China. The point was to box in China, to stifle the expansion of the the red army, etc. When did Nixon and Kissinger visit China? When did we pull out of Saigon? When did we 'Fully Normalize' trade relations with China? 1972, 1975, 1979. The president of the US went to China and surrendered in private and asked to save face. US draws down and withdraws. US then lets China out of the box and opens trade.

The 'Point' of Vietnam was for the exact opposite to happen. In that hypothetical world China withdraws and is cut off from the world. The PLA withers and China turns into a third world colonial territory with western puppet rulers.
