NATO briefly went to war with Russia last month when a British vessel entered Russian waters. It took only threats and shots across the bow to get a NATO surrender and retreat.
Most conflicts will be that way. Mere demonstrations of willingness to rachet up weapons use. Since so many now have hypersonics a real shootingnwar won't favor the USA so it will simply be a decision of whether to accept inflicted casualties or not.
