What I read is the captain knowingly sent the email in a way he knew it would be leaked instead of simply going up the chain of command. IMO he should be fired for that. The only reason I would support the captain is if he already tried sending the information up the chain of command and did not get the results his ship needed. That might be the case, it would be hard to verify, hopefully at some point we will hear the captain's side of it.
