Semi-related and re. real world vs advertised performance. This bad memory just popped into my head: Member those scanners (Parallel port/SCSI era), that gave you 6 gorillion dpi (interpolated)? Those were the shit, literally. :)
I had a handheld device that had it's own card. Was probably SCSI or some poor implementation thereof.
Yeah, it was shit, but I had loads of fun with it.
My first one, back in the Atari ST days, was a reflex light sensor similar to the CNY70 but angled (can't find the exact part atm), mounted to the print head on an Epson compatible printer.
