The reason we had to switch from VHS tapes to DVDs and BluRays was because the Japanese master craftsman who would meticulously hand-wind the tiny head coils used in VCRs died in the late 90s at the age of 174. He was the last remaining video head coil masters and all the secrets of his lost art died with him as he had no living heirs or apprentices.
The same thing happened with countless other technologies. The 8-track tape, the credit card imprinter, the public telephone booth and the automatic seat belt in cars all suffered the same fate when their master craftsmen died. Hell, we all suffered when Ron Popeil died and took the secrets of the Pocket Fisherman, Dial-O-Matic chopper and the Showtime Rotisserie cooker to his grave. So many secrets of master craftsman lost. So many changes to our technology timeline because of it. How will we survive?
p.s. - this is obviously satire and Ron Popeil was jewish.
