The deeper the fantasy that they exist within, the more defensive -and offensive- they will perpetually become as they struggle to stave off any facet of reality that anyone and anything might threaten them with having to face.
The result is a reinforcing and deepening of the fantasy as they delve deeper into it to avoid reality. As it gets harder for them to keep reality at bay, and the fantasy becomes warped to a breaking point, eventually encountering one fragment of reality too many that they cannot compensate for will shatter both their fantasy and their mind.
