12¢ sounds a little high.

According to the Sears & Roebuck Catalog for 1928 a box of 100 cartridges for a Colt .45 revolver cost $1.66. That's 1.6¢ per cartridge in 1928.

It doesn't say how big the boxes were but at the most expensive a box of 50 for $2 would be 4¢ per bullet.

MYTH BUSTED

Back when revolvers were first made the rounds may have been more expensive. Later modern manufacturing techniques may have helped to reduce the price. IDK.

It was actually a .44 caliber round, AKA , 44-40 (44 caliber + 40 grains Black Powder) that also fit rifles of the day. So, just going by todays prices ammo looks pretty inexpensive compared to a "Slug" or "Shot" at a bar.

And now, a fucking round of .22 goes for more than that.
