Every zookeeper i've heard from about hippos says the same thing: "You do not force the hippo to do anything, you give them a reward if they do what you ask them to, and always be ready to jump the fence." the fence is not there top stop the hippo, its to make the hippo hesitate and not crush it like the hollow steel tubing it is once the hippo decides it wants through.
