Pilots are mostly autopilot assistants nowadays.

True, it’s called pilot monitoring. Eventually there will be no pilot flying. Many aviation accidents today happen because the automatic system failed and the pilots have no idea how to actually fly the airplane. It’s a sad state of affairs, pilots rely so much on automation. I was a flight engineer, I can’t count how many times when things went wrong and I had to yell out “who the duck is flying the airplane!” Control ensued. I didn’t die. Good times!
