I did this shit for a few years... we had to set a passthrough between the the chopper and the hot before they made contact with the line through us! You could literally feel the "energy" about 8 feet out from contact with the high voltage cables. You can see the two guy make contact with a rod right as the chopper eases up to to them and again as he brings them to the next run. Those dudes are holding hands while it happens and literally thousands of volts are just passing right through them...

The skill and dexterity of the pilot always astounded me. High alpine search and rescue flight crews were the only other time I have ever seen that level of mastery over a machine. True masters of their craft. These guys are real life pros!

That's a job you'll never get bored at work. Too busy staying alive. If the helicopter pilot fucks up, it's over. But I think most of the time these guys use truck lifts or ladders.

You cant use a cheery picker or a lift truck for this work. It has to be done by helicopter so that a grounding pathway cannot be established. If you were to go up to one of these lines in a lift truck your would get high voltage plasma arching from the cable to the truck about 5 feet out from contact and everyone and everything on that truck would become a highly charged bbq.

Since the helicopter has no contact to ground the volts just pass through the equipment and continue down the line.
