In reality this is just a problem with specifying the goal, and how AI can think outside the box. It's the classic problem in programming: you must specify clearly what you want. To an AI with no intelligence, it can be very hard to program it with your goal, and have it really seek what you think it's seeking.

In humans it's called learned helplessness.
