Good old CRT. I had a 21" CRT back in the day. That was top of the line! I don't remember what it cost, but it was big bucks back then. It weighed 90 lbs!
Heck I remember my grandmother had an old tube TV in the basement. That thing was cool old tech.
So how was this problem solved? Did they end up buying the old fart a new TV?

It's the UK. The person said they'd stop using it but probably got threatened with loss of their television license if they didn't.

I had no idea a TV license is a thing. After reading about it; that has to be the most stupid tax I've ever heard of. Not only that, the efforts they go through, to enforce the tax hardly seem worth it.
