Chickens tear up the dirt and eat anything, so I wouldn't use them except to clear land.

Even the plants once they are growing and not seeds? what would you recommend?

Yes, I've seen them eat thistles and they weren't starved either. Some plants they won't touch, but they'll scratch the dirt and dig dust baths, and trample everything.

I would recommend covering your plants in plastic sheeting, then gassing them with CO2 for a few hours. I don't think too many bugs will survive that.
